Sartre & Beauvoir

Les Amants du Flore1

This year, one of my goals is to go to the movies - not often, but occasionally. So, I search the Internet for movies currently being screened when the inclination prompts, and I go to theaters if there is one I’m interested in.

I went to a theater named Eurospace in Shibuya to see a French movie, Les Amants du Flore, this evening. It’s about one of the 20th century's leading couples, Jean-Paul Sartre (1905 – 1980) and Simone de Beauvoir (1908 – 1986) and depicts them form their encounter at the Sorbonne to early 40s. The literal translation of the title is “The Lovers of Flower”, but I suppose Flore refers le Café de Flore that is on Blvd. St-Germain the couple frequented.

Though I wasn’t influenced by Sartre at all, I read a Beauvoir’s book, The Second Sex, and speculated the femininity and gender in my teenage (accurately, I made myself feel to do so). When I was in Paris and didn’t know what to do with my time, I visited famous people’s graves including theirs. However, I’m not emotionally involved with the great cultural figures now. I chose the movie without particular motive. I expected the streets of Paris form it.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many locations in the town, but I liked the movie. It really doesn’t involve elements of their philosophies. I think it portrays them as ordinary humans who are trying to be philosophers and writers. In that sense, it's like a growing-up story with humorous scenes. The funniest scene for me was that an American lover of Beauvoir, the main character, said to her, “Why don’t we live together in Chicago”. No one laugh at that, though. Can you imagine she lives in Chicago?
