Budva, The biggest resort town in Montenegro

Budva 1

My friend and I left Belgrade and went to Montenegro for a vacation trip.
From Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, we flew to Tivat airport by the twin-propeller plane in the photo below at an early hour.

Tivat is a small coastal town in southwest Montenegro, located in the Bay of Kotor.

We planned to stay in Herceg-Novi for 3 nights and one night in Kotor. Before going to Herceg-Novi, we stopped by at Bduva for lunch.
According to Wiki Travel, Budva is a coastal tourist resort in Montenegro and often called "Montenegrin Miami", because it is the most crowded and most popular tourist resort in Montenegro, with beaches and vibrant nightlife

Budva 3

I preliminarily reserved taxis from the airport to Bduva and from Bduva to Herceg-Novi in Japan. We met a driver at the airport, and then the 30-minute drive took us to Budva.

The walled-off old town of Budva facing the Adriatic is small enough to walk around in 10 minutes.

Budva 7

It was very, so we broke a stroll short and decided on a restaurant to go to. Including Budva, the menu of restaurants in tourist areas in costal Montenegro was similar: Italian antipasto, grilled meat or sea food, pizza, pasta, sandwiches, hamburger, salad, French fry, and so on. So, we chose the one with pleasant terrace tables.

Serbian Cuisine, Trust and Safety

belgrade3_1.jpg

I stayed Belgrade for 5 nights, and I liked the city over all. One of the reasons was that meals were very fine. Of course, wherever someone goes, some restaurants serve good one, while others don’t. However, think Serbian have a decent sense of cooking. I mean, they know how to treat ingredients decently.

My colleagues and I left the cocktail party on the first night and went to a restaurant named Kolarac serving local cuisine in Knez Mihailova Street.

Bottom Left: beef soup Right: Pljeskavica (hamburger)

These were Serbia’s national dishes and match most people’s taste preferences. We appreciated them especially after our long trips.

One beauty of Serbia’s cuisine style was that we could share dishes, which we call Izakaya style. However, in that case, all dishes including appetizers, side dishes, and entrees were served at one time.

This is brown rice risotto cooked with mushrooms. I had it at an ordinary bistro, not in a pompous organic restaurant or annoying vegetarian restaurant. The constitution of menu that has a favorable balance and a lot of options was one of the other good points.

Surprisingly, McDonald in Belgrade served a nice sandwich. There was one in front of my hotel, and I crossed the street and headed to it every morning. Not apply only to McDonald, every restaurant serves very tasty bread has a wider variety of items.

Strolling through Belgrade

I stayed at a former first-class hotel, Hotel Moskva that was located in the center of Belgrade. The accommodations at that classic hotel were much better than expected.

We came to view his Serbian Orthodox Church and ran into a ceremony. We discreetly walked into the church and took (maybe) their Communion. It was the first time for me to see a ceremony of Orthodox Church. In their manner, they didn’t just make a cross on one's chest, but they also kneeled and bowed until forehead touched the floor after that. The chant was also unique.

The main pedestrian and shopping zone, Knez Mihailova Street, was a pathway through many spots including Belgrade Fortress, so I walked along it many times during the stay.

Skadarlija that is known as bohemian quarter of Belgrade is a vintage street, which is also called Belgrade’s Montmartre. This famous tourist attraction includes many restaurants offering the typical national cuisine. I had lunch (once) and dinner (twice) there.

Do you know? After Yugoslav Wars, Japan helped Serbia including extending buses. The people of Serbia made donations, about 200 million yen for the Great East Japan Earthquake (the average monthly income in the country is 40,000 yen).

Hi, Belgrade!

belgrade1_1

I regularly go overseas once a year for a conference, and I deliberately choose one in Europe over recent years. This time, the venue was Belgrade, Serbia located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The river in front of the left in the opining photo is Sava, and the one in the back is Danube. I stayed there for 5 nights, and then I joined my friends and traveled around Montenegro and Greece.

belgrade1_2

For people who are around the same age as Kinakinw and above, the city may be remembered as the capital of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. There are still many functional “60s-modern” buildings and the former capital is scarred by Yugoslav Wars in 90s. Though, I didn’t have time to look around those tragic sites.

On the day of my arrival, an evening cocktail party was held a restaurant in Belgrade Fortress consists of the old citadel and Kalemegdan Park where I took the opening photo.

Despairingly Magnificent Prospect

Mideast1

At the date of 23rd of September at 2pm, I’m writing this with half an eye on CNN world news, the air strike on ISIS in Syria by the U.S. and "partner nation forces".

I passed through near the disputed region of Mideast on my flight from Doha to Belgrade last month. The landscapes of this area were nothing short of eye-opening in a good way and a bad way. That was a tremendous view of bare hillside and bare field for miles and miles. It seemed that there was nothing to cure our mind and body.

Mideast2

I selected a left-side window seat, so the northern part of Iraq ,where the U.S. was carrying out a raid at that time, should be beyond the horizon. I deeply accepted the situation of the follower of Yazidi who were forced to flee to the non-viable mountains . And Syria was further ahead of that.

Toi, West Izu-1

I spend couple of days with my best friend and her mother in the west coast of Izu Peninsula during the New Year holidays.

West Izu

As with most Izu areas, hot spring resorts and fishing ports are dotted alongside of the west coast, but unlike the other areas, they aren’t accessible by train. So, except summer vacation season, the west coast facing Suruga Bay is much quieter than the rest of the peninsula.

Hot Spring Bath Floating in the Sea

Ajiro Izu-Taga1

I made an overnight trip to Ajiro with the other day.

My friend and I took a bullet train from Tokyo and got together with the other friend from Osaka at Atami Station. Then, we headed to a famous soba noodle shop named Taga in Izu-Taga.

Enjoying the lovely garden, we had lunch. When you visit there, don’t forget to order Japanese omelette!

I decided to stay at a hot spring inn and seafood restaurant, Hirazuru, in Ajiro. This is my third visit to the seafront inn: I had lunch at the restaurant at the first time and just used bathing facilities at the second time. Through the experiences, I knew the inn serves delicious seafood (it’s run by a marine product processing company) and has a very nice hot spring.

Ajiro Izu-taga9

Ajiro Izu-taga7 Ajiro Izu-taga8

In Japanese inn, the price of accommodation usually includes dinner and breakfast (one night and two meals per day), and I chose the reasonable set meal, and it was adequate in terms of both quantity and quality.

The other attraction of the inn was the view from the outside bathtub that was just like floating in the sea!

Ajiro and Izu-Taga are small hot-spring resorts located in Izu Peninsula. It’s about a 10-to-20 minute drive away (also, a few-minute train ride) from Atami that is a vast hot-spring resort with many large luxurious hotels and the gateway to East coast of the peninsula. The short drive changes many things. If you prefer resorts with laid-back atmosphere and want to enjoy fresh local seafood with reasonable price, why don’t you take a road trip to these towns?

Cousin Meeting in Takayu Hot Spring Resort in Fukushima

Takayu 2013_1

We, my four cousins, my sister and I, hold a once-yearly meeting. Actually, we just enjoy hot spring baths, dinners and sightseeing on our trip.

This year, we went on an overnight trip to Takayu hot spring resort in Fukushima.
We got together at Fukushima Station at lunchtime and headed to a famous soba noodle place named Oyama-Kadoya in the foot of Mount Shinobu that rises 275 meters from the surrounding flat Fukushima Basin.

Oyama-Kadoya has several restaurants for purposes. We select a casual one named Yukko where we can sit by the fireside and have dishes including noodles.

Takayu 2013_3 Takayu 2013_4

The restaurant is famous for dishes using yuzu (species of aromatic Asiatic citron). Before the Great East Japan Earthquake, they used locally grown yuzus, but now they order them from western Japan because some people don’t want to eat local ones even if its amount of radioactive substance is below a predetermined threshold.

Following my visit to Takayu last year, it was second time for me to go there.
Discovered 400 years ago, Takayu hot spring resort located 750 – 800 meters above sea level is one of celebrated spas in Tohoku. It’s relatively small resorts dotted with a little more than 10 inns, and you can enjoy abundant amounts of fresh milky white water having a sulfurous odor in all those inns.

Takayu 2013_7 Takayu 2013_8

The Japanese Inn, Azuma-ya, at which we stayed has a 400-year-old history back to the Edo period. While there are 10 rooms, there are 8 hot spring baths (3 for male, 3 for female, and 2 reserved ones). The outside bath with a view appears in the opening photo is situated in the woods, which is just 3 minute walk from the main building.
